OCEANOGRAPHY

With the gradual disappearance of land based resources, man will have to pay better attention to oceans in future. Oceanography is multidisciplinary in nature, covering physics, chemistry, mathematics, geology, biology, and engineering. Physical and chemical properties origin and geological framework of oceans, and life forms that inhabits the marine environment come under this topic.
Oceanography is often divided into four separate branches: geological, physical, chemical and biological. The main focus is at present research. It involves sampling of sea water and marine life for analysis and study. Remote sensing with help of satellites and the exploration of a sea floor by means of deep sea drilling and seismic profiling of the terrestrial crust below the ocean bottom are necessary. Estimating of ocean resources, prediction of weather and climatic changes are some of its application.
The influence of industrial and other types of pollution and preservation of purity of water are subject of this discipline. Oceanographer who may have to work in isolated offshore situation for long periods even in hostile weather, they should have good physical stamina. They will find opportunities for regular work in laboratories, industrial plants, weather forecasting stations, shipyards, aquarium, or other government organizations.
Oceanography should be blessed with attributes for good research work. Oceanography has revealed the physics of rip currents, rip currents flow in very erratic pattern; they are not stable in their courses as it was believed earlier. It may help us in explaining why they can be so dangerous for even experienced swimmers. Oceanography has discovered the behavior by finding the motion of colored dye added to a wave pool producing rip currents.
