Sudan is a country situated northern eastern side of African continent. It is the tenth largest country of the world by area and it happens to be the largest country of Africa and Arab world. Its nabour country is Egypt to north and surrounded by red sea to the north east.
In 1956, Sudan gained its independce from United Kingdom and Egypt, but there was a long conflict between northern Sudan (which mainly consist of Arab and Nubian roots) and southern Sudan (which comprises Christian and Animist Niotes). There conflict turned into civil war which ended after 17 years. Sudan’s economy is one of the flourishing economies of the world, which mainly consist of agriculture, oil and minerals.
From 9 to 15January2011, a referendum took place in southern Sudan regarding their freedom to choose an independent country or to remain as a part of Sudan. This referendum was an agreement between the central government and south Sudan party named as Sudan’s people liberation army.
On 30th January 2011, the initial results of referendum commission made it clear that southern Sudan wants independence, at least 98% people voted for independence and only 1% voter’s selected unity.
Northern Sudan protested as they disliked the separation of their country where as southern Sudan celebrated their independence. In north Sudan’s capital Khartoum students protested against Omar al Bashir’s regime and few clashes were reported with police.
The peace deal which was held in 2005, that ended one the second long civil war fought between north Sudan and south Sudan , more than 2 million people lost their lives. Omar al Bashir under immense international pressure assured to recognize the results and referendum started on time.
