Tirur is a town situated in Malappuram district,Kerala.Tirur is also a Municipality. Tirur has top place among the business centres of Malappuram district. Tirur is situated 41 km south of Kozhikode or Calicut, on the Mangalore-Madras railway line.The nearest cities of Tirur are Calicut,Kottakkal,Malappuram.
Tirur is also part of the first laid railroad in Kerala.Tirur has historically significance. The birth place of Thunchan Ramanujan Ezhuthchan, the founder of Malayalam, [Thunchan Parambu] is  in Tirur. Betel(vettila):Tirur is well known for it's betel cultivation.Tirur exporting a large quantity of betel all around the world.
            Tirur is a witness for  'wagon tragedy' , 1921 rebellion as the British police carried 70 revolutionists in a fully closed airtight train wagon to pothannur in 1921 and thus killed more than 50 peoples by asphyxation. The wagons were returned with the dead bodies to Tirur. These bodies were laid to rest in Khabristan of the mosque nearby Tirur. Tirur Municipality has built a  Tirur town hall in memory of the Wagon Tragedy.In Tirur town hall , a real size train wagon built right next to the building.
            There are many goventment schools and  colleges in Tirur. Seethi  Saheb Memorial Polytechnic College (SSM Poly Tirur) is one among the prominent centres of engineering studies in Kerala. Tirur Fathima Matha English school,Tirur  NSS English School, Tirur MES Central School are the prominent private schools in tirur. Bharathiya Vidya BhavanEnglish School is located at Tirunavaya, Tirur.
