The Refrigerator – Just Another Daily Necessity

The refrigerator that we are using today was not always on the reach of the hand for people. Before 1940’s the refrigerator was not so much in a commercial use. After this it started to spread and it reached almost all household in America. In UK and other countries in Europe, the commercial usage of the refrigerator started much later in the 190’s, and since than gradually has become a part and necessity for each household.

The first refrigerators were using toxic gas that was sometimes leaking and causing danger to the people. After the discovery of the Freon based refrigerator, the prices lowered and the people could afford to have it in their home. There are couple of styles of refrigerators and all of them are combination of refrigerating compartment and a freezing compartment.
The traditional style has a combination of top freezer compartment which is smaller, than the down refrigerating compartment which is usually bigger. Reverse style of this refrigerator is also available where the freezing compartment is in the down part and the refrigerating is in the upper part. The other popular refrigerator is side by side style that gives one side each to the refrigerating and freezing compartments. The latest refrigerator type is French door style, including two doors opening the refrigerating upper part and one door opening the freezing down part.

Refrigerators come in many colours as well. At the beginning they were mostly white, but later designers started producing coloured refrigerators and at one point in the 1960’s turquoise and pink were quite popular and in the 1970’s green, golden and almond were more stylish. Today the stainless still refrigerators are very fashionable and the latest scream of the manufacturers designs are multi-coloured refrigerators.

Refrigerators can stand as a separate house hold appliance or as a build in cabinet part. They come in different sizes and can weight from one hundred to tow hundred kilos. Many of the modern refrigerators have ice cube making compartment. The latest discovery in the refrigerator industry has brought the non-defrosting refrigerators which saved many people from tiresomely ice cleaning of the older versions.

These days the refrigerator is a mush have appliance in each house holds, but do not be surprised that not all the people in the world can enjoy the freshness and longer life of the food and drinks. Many countries that suffer from load shadings can not benefit from the usage of the refrigerator simply because there is no electricity to run the appliance. For example Nepal is one of the many countries that have a constant load shading schedule, and people do not get electricity even up to 18 hours a day, for at least four to five months a year. Many countries like Ghana and Jamaica face the same destiny of continuant black outs.
